Isophthalic for Molds

What is Isophthalic Mold Gel Coat?

Fiberglass molds are widely used and used in various reinforced polyester processing technologies. The quality of the molded product depends on the quality of the mould. The choice of materials with which to make the mold will determine both its yield and its duration. The isophthalic gel coat for molds developed by Italbeit is characterized by the following qualities:

Gel coats for molds clearly find use in the construction or maintenance of molds made of fiberglass.
It is available in three colors: orange, black, green.

Application features

For the application it is recommended to check the temperature of the product, of the models and of the environment, which must be between 18°C and 25°C. The product is supplied already accelerated and must be catalysed with the traditional MEKP at a rate of 1% – 2%. The thickness of the wet gel coat film must be, depending on the shape of the model and the application method, approximately 0.6 – 0.7 mm, which is equivalent to a quantity of product between 700 and 900 g/m² about.
The final thickness must be achieved with homogeneous passes. If the shape of the mold has cavities, it is advisable to air them immediately after freezing to avoid stagnation of styrene vapors and allow polymerization to complete. Approximately 120/180 minutes after application, when the gel coat film has completely hardened, you can proceed with lamination with resin and fiberglass. For the first layers of reinforcement use a light fiber.
In the case of “airless” or similar systems, we recommend the correct setup of the system (nozzle and pressure). If further dilution should be necessary for its application, the type and quantity of thinner can vary according to the specific needs of the customer. In any case, our technicians are at your disposal for precise indications in this regard.
